Christmas at The Kraken Café – Homer, Alaska’s Coziest Hidden Gem

There are few things in life I trust without hesitation:

I had the pure luck (and slightly frozen nose) of visiting Homer over Christmas, when this tiny seaside town looks like it was pulled straight out of a snow globe — complete with salty air, glistening ice, and people so nice you start questioning your big-city cynicism.

But let’s talk about the real star of my Alaskan Christmas:
👉 The Kraken Café.

🎅🏼 A Café That Feels Like Home (If Home Smelled Like Fresh Bread and Happiness)

Walking into The Kraken Café on a crisp December afternoon felt like being wrapped in a bear hug from a Viking grandmother.
The smell of freshly baked bread, sizzling bacon, and coffee strong enough to wake up a hibernating bear hit me immediately.

Locals were thawing out over bowls of steaming chowder, and the barista was wearing a Santa hat — not because it was a requirement, but because vibes.

The place isn’t big. It’s cozy, quirky in all the best ways, and you can tell that every corner was decorated with love, not a corporate checklist. Christmas lights dangled everywhere, and a tiny Kraken figurine wore a miniature Santa outfit. (Five stars for festive Kraken energy.)

🍳 What I Ordered (and Why You Should Too)

You know when you go somewhere and everything on the menu speaks to your soul?
Yeah, it was one of those moments.

Here’s what I ordered, because apparently Christmas calories don’t count in Alaska:

  • The Sourdough Breakfast Sandwich:
Fresh, tangy sourdough stacked with thick-cut bacon, melty cheese, farm eggs, and homemade aioli that made me briefly lose the ability to form coherent thoughts.
Rating: 14/10, would fight a polar bear for it.
  • Kraken Latte:
A gingerbread-spiced latte topped with real whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon. It tasted like Christmas, love, and the kind of nostalgia that makes you want to knit something immediately.
  • Bonus Round: The House-Made Cinnamon Roll:
No exaggeration — this thing was bigger than my hand and worth every sticky, sugary, slightly shameful bite.
Pro Tip: Order one “for the road” and eat it immediately anyway.

❄️ Why The Kraken Café Made My Christmas

Traveling during the holidays can be rough. It’s easy to feel a little homesick when you’re thousands of miles away from your traditions, your people, and your own couch.
But sitting there at The Kraken Café, watching snow flurries dance outside while sipping my Kraken Latte, I didn’t feel like a tourist.

I felt like I had found a new little Christmas memory.
A new tradition, even — one that smelled like coffee and baked goods and felt like home.

🗺️ If You Go:

  • Location: Right along the Homer Spit (you can’t miss it — just look for the people who look way too cozy for their own good).
  • Hours: They were open on Christmas Eve (bless them) and closed Christmas Day — double-check if you’re heading there around the holidays.
  • What to Order: Trust me, anything with sourdough. And don’t sleep on the seasonal lattes.
  • Bring: An appetite, your coziest sweater, and the willpower to not order one of everything (good luck).

Final Thoughts

Some places are just a pit stop.
Others are a memory you want to fold up and carry with you.

The Kraken Café in Homer, Alaska — during one of the coldest, most beautiful Christmases of my life — is absolutely the latter.

So if you ever find yourself in Homer around the holidays, do yourself a favor:
Follow the scent of sourdough and Christmas cheer straight to The Kraken.

And if you see someone inhaling a cinnamon roll like their life depends on it…
yeah, that’s probably me. 🐙🎄

Until the next bite,
